GO FOLKESTONE MAGAZINE APRIL 2021

What a fantastic write up in the Go Folkestone magazine this month, it’s things like this that make it all worth while.

Our photography competition for the front cover of our next book which should be out in August closes on the 1st May. Please send your pics of beach huts to the email address above. We don’t appear to have any photos yet with any huts with doors open, let’s have a last minute rush of intriguing different photos of our beach huts. The best one will be on our front cover for the anthology by Write By The Sea. The competition is open to all Folkestone residents.

NEWS – TONIGHT

Hi, first of all I hope you are keeping well and safe. A few things have been bubbling away in the background and I would like to share the Zoom meetings with you that Tony has undertaken to host for the group.  Thank you Tony.

I am struggling with this lockdown so not really up for much at all, in fact I keep thinking I should be writing about all this as it will eventually be history that our future generations will read about and learn, but the motivation and thoughts are just not there.

Here is the message from Tony about how to connect with us tonight.

TONIGHT 6.55

Firstly, if you have not already done so, please make sure you have downloaded Zoom:

https://zoom.us/

Zoom is the leader in modern enterprise video communications, with an easy, reliable cloud platform for video and audio conferencing, chat, and webinars across mobile, desktop, and room systems. Zoom Rooms is the original software-based conference room solution used around the world in board, conference, huddle, and training rooms, as well as executive offices and classrooms. Founded in 2011 …

The meeting ID is 788-8834-9662

The meeting Password is 132655

You may not have to use these figures.

I will open things up at 6.55pm.

I have now purchased a monthly subscription to Zoom, so there should be no issues about the meeting stopping suddenly.

That said, we can break again around 8pm in order that, those who wish to, can express their support for key workers.

I am planning now that we are joined each week by one or more local creatives to entertain us. This week, I am delighted to say that we have two popular artists for the price of one.

Some of you may know Helen Finn (Finn to her friends), owner of YoYo’s Street Food stall on the Old High Street. She is also a talented singer-songwriter, as well as fine interpreter of others’ work, and she will be singing and playing for us this evening.

In addition, I am so pleased that we will have Anthony White from Poets’ Corner reading his latest poem, “Isolation April 2020”.

With the 75th anniversary of VE Day on the following day, I invite attendees to read anything relating to the Second World War that is meaningful to them – poem, speech, personal reminiscence. Frank Butler and I are currently planning to read from the poets from that conflict.

It would also have been Robert Browning’s birthday, so if anyone wants to read from his work, they will be very welcome.

Ultimately, you are invited to read anything – a favourite poem, extract from fiction – or something you have written.

And if all else fails, I have another light Coronavirus inspired quiz for us to do!

Finally, if anyone would like to invite friends to join us, it would be great to see them too.

Look forward to seeing you this evening!

MEET AUTHORS & ARTISTS AT OUR APRIL EVENT

D93633E9-9E7A-4A55-9A6E-4C03029131EC_1_201_a

The Beacon is a relatively new school on Park Farm Road in Folkestone.

This year for the first time they are having an event on Saturday 4th April 2020 from 10 am until 8 pm. This will be for many authors, artists and well being practitioners. Authors will have a table or bring their own, they can bring props etc to decorate their display, it is up to them how they organise their selling space. Artists will have wall available for all their pictures as well as a table. Well being will also have a table and whatever they bring to aid their practise. Tables will be £10 for authors and £35 for artists. The area is very large so plenty of space for everyone.

This is a free event for people to attend.

There is also the provision to set-up and take down the day before and day after as it is a long day.

The food and bar will be available all day with Chris and Liz from The Chambers behind that, so the food is going to be great. Thank you to you both for doing this, which I hope will be a brilliant success so we can do it again in August and December over two days and include workshops.

We also plan on having some gentle live music in the eating/drinking area so you can have a chill on the sofa with a coffee or drink.

If you are looking to stay in Folkestone for the weekend then Jo has availability at her properties here. https://www.airbnb.co.uk/users/show/38384276

So far we have  a good number of people booking tables but we need some more so if you have a book or painting you wish to sell then please do get in touch.

Contact Karen at karensworld.writer@yahoo.com

We require authors, artists and well being practitioners. If you can provide some live music then please get in touch, it would be good if this could be done on a busking arrangement but if not then please send your prices. I will add that we do not have much in the pot for expenses.

There will be free parking on the sight that day.  Come for the day or even the weekend at the seaside.

Please do share this so we reach more people about this super event, thank you.

CAROL CREASEY

Carol Maureen Creasey was born in Kent on 8th April 1944, and has lived most of her life there. She was educated at Archbishop Tenison’s Grammar School, where she attained O level GCE in French and Latin. She returned to evening classes at the age of 40, and passed GCSE grade B in 5 more subjects, and then passed A level English Literature. It was during those classes she discovered how much she enjoyed writing. She owned and ran her own shop as well as bringing up 4 children, and now also has 4 grand daughters and 1 great grand daughter, and a great grand son.

Her first book entitled MY LIFE IS WORTH LIVING! published in 1993 was inspired by her son, who was born with autism and multiple handicaps, but also a very strong will to live. At this time she spent her time trying to raise awareness of the difficulties faced by families of disabled children by contacting secondary schools, and through this was invited to speak at some of their morning assemblies.

She has continued to write articles about a variety of subjects since then, publishing them on internet writing sites.

Her second book with United Writers was published in 2006, which is about hypocrisy and tangled love affairs, and the grief that this can cause. It is entitled. Not Just an Affair.

Then came EVIL WOMAN, which was published on 24th May 2013, she tried to create a woman so evil that it leaves the reader feeling disturbed, and wondering what she will do next. The evil woman uses anything and everyone that she can to get what she wants in life, leaving a trail of destruction behind her. The sequel, entitled EVIL WOMAN …takes REVENGE was published in in June 2015.

Her next work was set in the 1960’s entitled The Power of Love. It is about a mother’s love for her autistic son at a time when very little was known about the condition, and her feelings for the boy’s father. her latest work,, One Moment of Madness was published in April 2018, and has already been nominated for a READER’S CHOICE AWARD. It came 3rd, and now EVIL WOMAN has been nominated in the thriller section for 2019.

On 22nd February 2019 MY LIFE IS WORTH LIVING! was published again in paperback and made available on kindle, as all copies of the original hardback book had been sold.

Apart from writing, Carol enjoys long walks with her dog along her local beaches, swimming, and playing badminton. She also enjoys watching Formula One racing, being a fan of Lewis Hamilton.

She enjoys listening to most music, especially by Gareth Gates, who has also inspired her by his own example with the work he has done to help people who stammer.

You can get all Carols books from Amazon here.

THE BUILD-UP & THE THANKS

ACADEMY FM 105.9

A25D30B5-711F-4481-802F-52F879D70B10

During the build-up to the author event last week I took two authors into Academy FM to have a chat with Kay.

Kate Abley has written her first book called Changing the subject, which she very kindly gave me a copy of so it is on my list to read. Then from Ashford, we have Drew Wagar who is on his ninth book! You can read more about each author under the event tab.

Very good show so I will be putting up on here later in the week, I was the only one that messed up as usual.

I loved the signs that Rosie did from The Chambers and they certainly pulled in the crowds.

I will be doing a post about each author that attended the event over the next month if it makes you wish you had been there then make sure you put it in your diaries for next year. I had no thoughts about doing this again but I have been asked by everybody who came also Chris and Liz from The Chambers. It was an excellent venue with more authors popping up around each corner downstairs. So it looks like I will be hosting another ‘Meet the author’ event in 2020!

79DFA02A-4281-48DB-BDEA-B87C2E549A5B

I had many thank you’s and I would like to share a selection with you, as without the authors I could not have accomplished this. At least next year I know all what to do and what worked well, maybe I will practise the poster making on Canva a bit more! lol

BEN BARTON

MEET THE AUTHORS EVENT IN FOLKESTONE
007931B6-9062-4590-B1F9-09E0892C42EC
A stay in The Hospital
The latest book from Folkestone-based poet and filmmaker Ben Barton is The Hospital. Launched at the Folkestone Book Festival last year, this collection of poems tells the story of his admittance into hospital, and the experiences he had there. Made up of 45 individual poems, it could be considered one long poem, detailing life on an NHS ward while drugged on morphine and floating on the road to recovery.
Throughout the daily humiliations and the public spectacle of the sick and the dying, there are sparks of hope: a nip of whisky from another patient’s hip flask, the cries of a newborn from down the corridor, and one last meal, jab, swab before leaving.
The Hospital has been widely praised by many on the poetry scene for its honest, unflinching look at life on today’s wards in Brexit Britain.
“This collection brims with curiously sensitive glances at those who society would rather have us forget or ignore, shifting seamlessly between the bleak and restorative.”  – Anthony Anaxagorou, poet and artistic director of Out-Spoken.
“Ben Barton sets the power of the poet, the power of words to create order and meaning out of a potentially humiliating experience. He offers a special insight into the nature of suffering and being human, and the hopes that sustain us.” – Richard Swan, author of Melody’s Unicorn (2018) and former Ashford Poet of the Year.
Turning an unflinching gaze on the experience of illness and a prolonged stay in hospital, The Hospital connects with the humanity, horror and grace under pressure of both patients and staff. In a beautiful collection that is not without humour, Ben Barton shows that his formidable poetry gifts were not allowed to lie idle in that hospital bed.” – Patric Cunnane, poet and organiser of Dodo Modern Poets.
About the Author
Ben Barton grew up on the Romney Marsh in Kent. His poems have been published in Chroma, The Coffee House, Iota, The Journal, Neon Highway, Pulsar, Snakeskin, South, Time Haiku and Zygote in My Coffee, among others. Nominated for the Canterbury Poet of the Year Award and the erbacce-prize, he works as a professional copy and travel writer. Also a film artist, Ben’s film Stella Erratica was funded by the late David Bowie, and premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. He lives in Folkestone with his husband and son, beside the beautiful North Downs.
Ben will be attending the ‘Local Books’ event and signing copies of The Hospital.
